In MemoriamElwyn Schrag died Dec. 5, 2017, at Asbury Park, Newton, after a long struggle with multiple myeloma. He was born May 3, 1935, at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton.
He attended Pretty Prairie High School for one year, and graduated from Central Kansas Bible Academy in Hutchinson, of which his father, Waldo Schrag, was one of the founders. Elwyn received two bachelor's degrees: one from Grace Bible College and the second from the University of Kansas. He then went on to receive a Masters of Music Education from Wichita State University. After completing his formal education, Elwyn began full-time work in music as the band director for schools in Andover and Partridge. He was then hired as music minister at First Baptist Church in Wichita and was then asked to bring his family across the country to Canton, Ohio, where he became the Minister of Music and Education at First Baptist Church. It was there that he was ordained a pastor of the American Baptist Churches. His later pastoral callings included churches in Springfield, Cincinnati and Salem, Ohio. Elwyn married Marilyn Joyce Enns on July 28, 1956, in Hooker, Oklahoma. She died Feb. 22, 2017, after a long journey with Huntington's Disease. They were the proud parents of two sons, Brian (Barbara) Schrag, Dallas, and Brad (Joy Skjegstad) Schrag, Minneapolis, Minnesota; and two daughters, Lynelle (Bob) Morris, Tucson, Arizona, and Lori (Andrés) Tapia, Highland Park, Illinois. Together, Elwyn and Marilyn instilled a deep love of music in all four of their children. Other survivors include brother, Marlin Schrag, Valley Center; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 31, 2017, at Whitestone Mennonite Church. Inurnment will be on Dec. 30, 2017, at First Mennonite Church Cemetery, Pretty Prairie.
