Always Toward Heaven

Mindy and Wes asked me to write a song for their wedding. I fumbled around for a couple of months, not excited about anything that emerged. So then I asked God to give me the song, and these words flowed onto pages in my journal. I organized them a bit into spoken verses and a sung refrain. Here it is.
Souls, I think when you first wake in Heaven you'll look back at your marriage as a lively thing, jumps here, sidesteps there, surges and shallows and surprises and satisfactions engulfed in a powerful flow of Spirit. The delights and respites and healings and mountain air smiles and rain splashed faces and shoe cut rugs. Those were the whispers, the whiffs, the glimpses, the hints of what's ahead.

You could take it all now--you know Heaven
         when you see it
It's all yours now--but keep saving
         some for later

Single purpose but unpredictable eddies, touching darkness to heal, not building Heaven only for yourselves but for the others beside, behind, under, above you, letting lots of the Kingdom that's rightfully yours remain untouched, set aside for later, sometimes with a wistful sense of loss or longing, but then always aware of the incontrovertible certainty of completion, because the river you're swimming in together is God

In turns soothing-brisk-turbulent-placid-pounding-spraying-frozen-boiling - but always channeled, always directed, always love, always toward Heaven. Heaven with its heroism without hurt, infinitely growing life without death, purity without pain, more without waste. Always toward Heaven.

I recorded this at Keith Smelser's "Cool equipment I've been collecting for years" Studio. Akinlana Burrowes, sound engineer and Zumba instructor, gave some good advice about the mix.
