Ed Bartlett, a resident of Piedmont for more than 53 years, suffered a stroke and passed away peacefully on January 17, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89.
Born Edmund Grover Bartlett, Jr. on April 6, 1928 in San Francisco, he was the son of Edmund Grover Bartlett and Elizabeth Regan Bartlett. He attended Berkeley High School, served in the U.S. Navy, and played football for the storied Golden Bears coached by Pappy Waldorf. In 1952, Ed met the love of his life in Honolulu, Anna Laura Johnson, who was on her way around the world with other registered nurses. Meeting Ed and a moonlight walk on Waikiki Beach changed all of that. After a cross-oceanic romance, Ann and Ed were mar- ried on April 11, 1953. They lived in St. Paul, Minnesota and Philadelphia before returning to the Bay Area. They settled in Piedmont, where he and Ann raised a family of three daughters and one son. Ed is survived by his four children, Debi Anderson, Laurie Bartlett Keating and husband Mark, Michael Bartlett and wife Julie, and Barbara Schrag and husband Brian. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, all of whom felt his love and enjoyed his company immensely. Many others will miss him dearly. Ed will be remembered for his love of life, his warmth, optimism and generosity, his singing, his unwavering support of the Cal football program and dedication to his family, friends and community.
